Behind that winning entry
Four years ago she was an intern. Today Erin McKenzie is the editor of the MPA’s Supreme Magazine of the Year.
The 24-year-old — who last year won the Editorial Rising Star award — said she was “shocked” when Marketing was announced as the big winner.
“Looking around the room, there were a lot of other winners who had done new, innovative things." She said she thinks Marketing won because the team stick to their central values, but continually work at making small improvements.
Erin took over as editor at the beginning of last year. She said writing her entry was a “valuable exercise in self reflection” about the Marketing brand.
She started by going back to the core values of the brand, and what it does: “We are the authority on all things marcomms”.
Then she brainstormed all the things the team does that are central to that core vision, and wrote about those: the themed “deep dive” issues of the magazine that explore marketing trends; the daily newsy Stop Press newsletter; job listings; research via the Agency Perceptions survey; and events like Stoppies Awards.
She said the award was a real filip for the team, and recognition for the whole media industry. “We’re a young team, and we’re in a bit of an enviable position: we’re in the media and we’re reporting on the media…. We’re being inspired by the whole industry.”
