Circulation and readership growth for New Zealand Magazines

In the latest readership and circulation results released today, New Zealand Magazines has achieved solid readership growth to now reach 1.5 million unique readers in New Zealand, with 46% of all magazine readers now reading one of its titles.

New Zealand’s best-read weekly magazine, New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, has recorded a readership of 804,000. This extends its lead to 23,000 readers ahead of its nearest competitor in the weekly market. The Weekly has more household shoppers than any other consumer title.

The magazine has had an eventful period in the first half of 2011 with the launch of its new contemporary design and iconic portfolio of columnists, as well as record-breaking sales for its special Royal Wedding edition. This has resulted in a positive circulation result for the magazine, recording an increase of 1,522 copies to 82,040 – the largest increase for any New Zealand weekly women’s magazine.

New Zealand’s longest-selling weekly also has more New Zealanders connecting with the brand online. The number of unique browsers for the Weekly’s website has grown by 63% year-on-year to over 99,000 weekly visitors in June 2011.

The Weekly is joined by New Idea with 458,000 readers and That’s Life with 281,000 readers to give an unrivalled coverage in the weekly magazine category of 1,047,000 readers, an increase of 6,000 readers on last year.

The New Zealand Listener has also recorded a strong lift in readers, growing by 28,000 to 294,000 making it the number-one read and fastest growing current affairs magazine in New Zealand. Circulation was also up 1,261 copies to 62,811.

Youth title Creme, with a readership of 149,000, also experienced growth on its digital platform with unique browsers increasing by 38% and page impressions more than doubling in June 2011 compared to the same month last year. Combined with teen title Girlfriend, they now reach 225,000 readers each month. These teen titles reach almost half of all girls aged 10-14 years and almost 40% of all girls aged 15-19 years.

Simply You and Simply You Living reach 129,000 unique readers with the latest results. Both magazines showed positive circulation growth period-on-period.

Sarah Sandley, CEO of New Zealand Magazines, said, “We are delighted to have achieved growth in both print and online. To be in a position whereby 46% of all magazine readers in New Zealand read one of our titles points to the strength and depth of our magazine portfolio”.
