2016 Magazine Awards Winners

The Magazine Media Awards honour magazines, initiatives and individuals that demonstrate journalistic and design excellence, imagination, and commercial success. The exceptionally high standard of entries this year left our judges with hard decisions, in many cases only half a point in it. We wish to thanks all the entrants for their efforts, keep up the fabulous work.

Supreme Winner: Shelley Ferguson - Your Home and Garden

Judges Comments 'This editor has had a stellar year and the judges were unanimous in their verdict that there is little more that could be asked of an editor. She’s maintained her print product audience. She’s introduced a range of innovations including a retail branded home wares range. She’s fronted TV and she’s worked to bring in advertising revenue with integrated content.  This as well as the day-to-day task of editing a monthly magazine and working with her commercial team to bring in advertising revenue - and in this year, a significantly increased revenue. Her publisher says she epitomises what a modern editor should be."


Winner: Jo McCarroll - NZ Gardener

Judges Comments "Jo has harnessed her team to deliver content and increased engagement to her readers through several innovative campaigns involving both traditional methods, such a retail tip-ons,  but also more innovative strategies with interactive maps, use of social networking sites such as Neighborly, collaboration with the RSA on an Anzac Poppy centenary project and launching an online petition supporting berm gardening. This fresh thinking brings her magazine to life for her readers."


Winner: Virginia Larson - North & South

Judges Comments "Virginia is a thoroughly professional editor and operating at the top of her game. She provides unique and compelling content every month, for a demanding audience, in a market where “scoops” don’t last more than minutes. Her skills at identifying what her audience wants and successfully delivering it, has been reflected in exceptional newsstand results this year. Her repackaging content initiative, “Murder, She Wrote”, delivered significant revenue."

Lifetime Achievement Award

The 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient is Lynley Belton. 

Lynley Belton was awarded the prestigious Magazine Media  Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to the Industry. Lynley’s career has traversedacross many aspects of Magazine Media from finance, magazine distribution, running the Fairfax Magazines and recently restructuring the Fairfax distribution system. Her passion for the industry has seen her be enormously generous with her time and expertise in Industry bodies chairing the MPA Board twice and stints on the ABC Audit committee and  ASA complaints board. She is back fully immersed in magazines at the Lifestyle Magazine Group.

Congratulations Lynley, and thank you for all you have done for the industry.
